Confused about the references to "Anime" and "Manga" when reading about Sailor Moon? Simply put, the "Manga" version of Sailor Moon is the original Japense series of books, while "Anime" is the conversion of the story to television and the big screen--what we see on television and in the theaters. Many fans criticize the Anime version of Sailor Moon, claiming that it doesn't conform to the story accurately, and that the American version ventures too far entirely on many occasions.

Translation from Japanese animated episodes to American language and stricter broadcast standards, as well as conversion of various minor themes to American culture surely posed a difficulty to translators, and frequently important elements were omitted or altered.

The visual style of Anime and Manga is typically easy to spot. Patches of colors and lines in Anime are solid and consistent across large areas of a frame. Manga will typically look as if it were created with colored pencils or pens, and has much higher level of small detail, and generally looks as if the artist spent more time on it.
